Education Corner

Assisting the employer and worker to prevent and reduce on the job injuries is our top priority. However, when an injury does occur, as occupational therapists we are able to provide services from after injury to return to full work duties using a "functional" approach to therapy. The injured worker is able to safely build strength, endurance, and physical ability through the use of exercises and activities that are designed to "mimic" their job demands. Many successfully return to their jobs at this point.

At times, further conditioning may be needed to progress to a full day of the worker's regular on the job duties. This can be done in our clinic, progressing from an initial 2-4 hours, until the worker can perform regular job duties for a full 8 hour day. This is known as "work conditioning" or "work hardening" .This can also be done, on some job sites, where the worker may go back at 2-4 hours of regular duties, and then perform light duty tasks for the remainder of the day. They are progressed in physical demands and amount of time while on the job until they can tolerate a full day of their regular job skills. This is known as "transitional work".

Education of the injured worker empowers them with better understanding of body mechanics and how to approach their work tasks with proper and safe techniques. With the "functional" approach provided by our occupational therapy staff, the worker gains confidence in their physical ability and decreased fear of reinjury, factors shown to increase successful return to work.

With the "functional" approach both the employer and worker come out ahead!
